The Connection Between Sound, Mass, Energy, and Light

The first recorded instance of sound comes in the third verse of Genesis: And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:3). Amazingly (but not surprisingly), the Bible connects sound and light right at the point of creation.

God spoke, and there was light.

Getting back to what we talked about in Introduction to a Biblical Understanding of Light, let’s look at John 1:1-4:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 

And then align it John 1:14:

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

So, Jesus (the Word) was with God and was God right from the beginning.

It’s possible, that without even knowing it, Einstein demonstrated how the unseen God could take the form of a man, and then be resurrected in Jesus: E=mc². His now-famous theory of relativity gives us a deeper understanding of our amazing, infinite God.

The NOVA series, The Elegant Universe from PBS explains how E=mc² and modern string theory may show us about resonance and the universe: 

According to string theory, absolutely everything in the universe — all of the particles that make up matter and forces — is comprised of tiny vibrating fundamental strings. Moreover, every one of these strings is identical. The only difference between one string and another, whether it's a heavy particle that is part of an atom or a massless particle that carries light, is its resonant pattern, or how it vibrates. 

What determines the type of particle is the movement of the string and the energy associated with this movement. According to Einstein's famous equation E=mc², energy and mass are equivalent — that is, the more energy something contains, the more mass it has, and vice versa. In string theory, this equivalence accounts for the different masses of different particles: a lower-energy string is lighter (less massive) than a higher-energy string. 

String theory also accounts for the characteristics of massless particles that carry forces. The carriers of electromagnetic radiation, gravity, and the strong and weak forces—photons, gravitons, gluons, and the weak gauge bosons, respectively—interact with other particles based on their resonant vibrational patterns.

Unlike E=mc², the String Theory is not proven; in fact, it likely never will be because it deals with such complex objects. But it’s still very intriguing and according to many scientists, the math is sound.

Getting back to Einstein, he showed the Mass-Energy Equivalence. His three-part formula of E=mc² is outlined as follows:

• E is Energy
• m is Mass
• c is the Speed of Light (299,792,458 m/s or ~ 300,000 km/s), squared

In light of E=mc², we see that after Jesus rose from the dead, he physically appeared to His disciples in a locked room:

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld." (John 20:19-23) 

One possible explanation for the physical manifestation of Jesus to his disciples in a closed room, without being impeded by the walls, is the application of the equation E=mc².

Because Mass = Energy Equivalence, mass can be converted to energy and vice-versa.

As God, He can engage E=mc² any time He sovereignly chooses to. So, if our resurrected Lord wants to appear (as mass) and disappear (as energy), He can do so any time that it pleases Him.

In 1704, prior to Einstein’s discovery, Newton noted in his book, Opticks, that light and matter particles were interconvertible. Newton notes:

Are not the gross bodies and light convertible into one another, and may not bodies receive much of their activity from the particles of light which enter their composition? (Query 30)

Ultimately, we can be sure of this: When God speaks, things happen!
